The composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is the most important artist to work in the American musical theater over the past half-century. He has not only collaborated on more than a dozen landmark shows and written countless standard songs but has also been the single most influential force in bringing the Broadway musical into the modern age. In 2008, Mr. Sondheim agreed to accept a limited number of rare appearances, and Hennepin Theatre Trust is honored to welcome him to the State Theatre on Friday, March 5th at 8PM, hosted by Star Tribune critics Rohan Preston and Graydon Royce.

A look at what’s playing at the world famous Guthrie Theater:
(taken from the Guthrie Theater Website)

Macbeth
January 30 – April 03, 2010
Wurtele Thrust Stage

In this tale of treachery and ambition, a brave soldier and nobleman, Macbeth, encounters three weïrd sisters who prophesy his path to greatness. When their predictions begin to come true, Macbeth and his ambitious wife decide to do whatever is necessary to ensure their rise to power. They first hatch a plot to kill the king and take his place, and though all goes according to plan, they soon realize a single murder isn’t enough to maintain the throne. Obsession and paranoia get the best of them, driving the couple down a path of destruction on a quest for glory, even as the kingdom crumbles between their bloody fingers. Macbeth, Shakespeare’s shortest and darkest tragedy, performed here with no intermission, moves with the rapid pace of the murder thriller it is, exposing the politics of power and the corruption it breeds.
This production contains graphic violence.

Yellow Face
The Guthrie presents
A Mu Performing Arts production of Yellow Face

In classic David Hwang fashion, Yellow Face is a comic, head-spinning story in which mistaken racial identities collide with family, media and politics. Yellow Face begins as DHH (Twin Cities favorite Randy Reyes), fresh from the success of his Tony Award for M. Butterfly, publicly protests the casting of a Caucasian actor in a Eurasian role (Matt Rein) in the original production of Miss Saigon. The play spirals into a dizzying mix of autobiography and fantasy, government investigations and a sea of media debate that stirs up questions of what it means to be Asian and what it takes to be American.

Brief Encounter
February 11 – April 03, 2010
McGuire Proscenium Stage

In this must-see limited engagement direct from sold-out performances in London, San Francisco and New York, England’s acclaimed Kneehigh Theatre transforms Noël Coward’s iconic love story into a jaw-dropping fusion of theater, film and song. Forbidden passion brews in a 1938 railway station tearoom as a suburban housewife, over a series of stolen afternoons, falls madly in love with a married doctor. This groundbreaking theatrical event – ingeniously crafted with whimsical humor, dreamy romance and stunning multimedia effects – was hailed as “a first-class return to romance” (Daily Telegraph) and The New York Times said “Don’t be ashamed if you, too, feel a bit like swooning.”

So you like to run, but you’re in Minnesota during a winter where the cold air makes breathing hard and the ice makes running treacherous. Well, did you know you have another option other than our gym treadmills? The Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings and until recently the Minnesota Twins, opens its doors Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the winter for running. The best part? The cost is only $1! That’s right, one single, solitary dollar.

Plus, it’s not only for seasoned marathoners. You’ll find experienced runners, college students and local downtown residents running around the dome. You don’t need to be Carl Lewis to gain entrance either, whether you prefer a fast sprint or a leisurely jog, you’ll find your pace here. Oh, and did I mention its climate controlled?
